Overview

Keratoconus refers to an eye condition. Your cornea, the clear outer lens of the eye, has a shape like a ball. But at times the structure is not strong enough to hold its roundness and it bulges outward. Small fibers of protein in your eye help to hold your cornea in its right place. However, when they become weak, it is not possible for them to keep up their shape. As a result, the cornea becomes more cone-like. This occurs when you don’t have sufficient protective antioxidants in your cornea.

Causes

"While the exact cause of Keratoconus is not known, it is believed that this condition occurs since birth in most cases. Some common factors that may have a connection with Keratoconus are:
• Age
• Family history
• Inflammation
• Certain disorders such as Down syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, and retinitis pigmentosa
• Eye rubbing
• Race

Symptoms

"Some of the common symptoms of Keratoconus are:
• Light streaks
• Double vision when looking with just one eye
• Blurry vision
• Objects both near and far that look blurry
• Bright lights that appear to have halos around them
• Triple ghost images

Treatment

In most cases, all you need to treat this condition are eye glasses or contact lenses. Cornea collagen crosslinking is another treatment that may help treat Keratoconus. Your doctor may suggest implanting a ring called an Intacs under the surface of the cornea to flatten the cone shape and improve your vision.A cornea transplant is the last resort in case all other treatments prove to be useless.
