Osgood Schlatters disease is a swelling and irritation of the growth plate at the top of the shin bone. A growth plate is a layer of cartilage near the end of a bone where most of the bone’s growth happens.
Causes
Osgood Schlatters is caused by irritation of the bone growth plate. Osgood Schlatters disease is an Osteochondrosis that is a group of disorders of the growth plate which occurs when a child is growing rapidly.
Symptoms
Patients with Osgood Schlatters experience knee pain and swelling just below the kneecap. This pain may worsen during certain activities such as running, jumping, kneeling and eases with rest. This disease can affect one knee or the both knees.
Treatment
Your specialist may conduct a physical exam to check your child’s knee for swelling, tenderness, pain or redness. X-rays may be taken to look at the legs and joint more closely especially where the kneecap tendon attaches to the bone. After the diagnosis, the treatment is devised which may include:
• Resting the joint and limiting the time spent doing activities that aggravate the condition like jumping, running and kneeling.
• Icing the affected area to help pain and swelling
• Trying a strap
• Stretching leg muscles
• Cross train
• Protecting the knees
The Osgood Schlatters surgery is only done in adults because this disease usually revolves itself in children and surgery could damage their growth plate area.
