When to See a Sexologist

Overview

A sexologist is a healthcare provider who treats emotional or mental issues related to sexual problems. A sex therapist could be a social worker, medical doctor or psychologist, but they must have specialized training in sexual health and sexual problems. These medical experts use a variety of treatments to help you lead a healthy and positive sex lives. 

You should see a sexologist if you have one or more of these symptoms:

  • Lack of desire and arousal
  • Difficulty having an orgasm 
  • Pain during sex 
  • Difficulty getting or keeping an erection
  • Premature ejaculation
  • Pornography addiction
  • Feelings of anxiety, or shame related to sex

During sessions, your sex therapist will together with you in order to find out and change behaviors and thinking patterns that are disturbing your sex life. Your therapist may ask you various questions as a part of diagnosis such as:

  • Sex education 
  • Health background 
  • Sexual background
  • Beliefs related to sex
  • Specific sexual concerns
